stage traineeship internship wwoofing

Stage - Internship - Afstudeeronderzoek - Thesis Research

In our botanical nursery we test and produce many new, unknown plants with emphasis on bamboo, ornamental grasses, gingers and various kinds of bold leaf plants, Arums and shrubs. During the last couple of decades we have collected many intereseting plants and visitited natural habitats and collections around the globe.

Internship

During your internship you can learn about the different aspects of running a small scale botanical nursery with a wide range of species. The plants are produced by means of ecological sound organic principles. Johan also works as a landscape designer making plans for private gardens, public parcs, urban projects, wellness, recreational parcs and special projects in Holland and elswhere around the world. Please be prepared to do basic garden work like pruning, weeding, watering, fertilizing, potting, digging and planting etc. Apart from that, we will share our knowledge with you depending on your interest.

Thesis research topics

We have the following exciting and pioneering research topics available for horticultura/agricultural students :

1- Biobased bamboofibers from temperate bamboos
There is an increasing demand for CO2-absorbing plants which produce long lasting bio-based organic resource materials for low-tec and hi-tec purposes. Bamboo is one of the most interesting plantgroups for this purpose regarding its strength, fast growth and ecological sustainability. Surprisingly, little research has been done into the production capacity, wood quality and cultivation methods of bamboo species that are suitable for the temperate northern European climate. Help us explore the knowledge and possibilities in this area and help build a sustainable future.

2- Waterbamboos for a changing climate
With the increase of wheather extremes with prolonged hot and dry periods alternated with extreme rainfall, flooding and waterlogged soils the search for adaptive plants is more important than ever. In recent years we have collected a unique series of bamboo species that have aeration channels in their roots that allow them to tolerate waterlogging. At the same time, dry periods can also be bridged. What are the application limits of these types? How does their aeration system function? How do they grow and what can these species contribute to a sustainable future with bamboo? Let's find out!

3- Quantification of bamboo ecological functions in an urban environment
Bamboo has major regulation functions. Consider the absorption of CO2, which is converted into oxygen. A function that is of vital importance to our existence as humans. Absorbing nitrogen (No2) and particulate matter can also be of great importance, especially in the city air quality. Think of what plants can offer to the environment; shade from the scorching sun, blocking wind or absorbing sound. Even during heavy rainfall, bamboo offers space for water retention and in places with relief it prevents erosion.
Bamboo has a lot of extra potential compared to other plant species due to its large leaf surface, fast growth and dense root structure. Let's map this out better so that we can make recommendations for sustainable management.

The nursery has a production area, plant sale store and showgardens. The nursery is located in the riverine area in the middle of The Netherlands. The district is called 'De Betuwe', it is an area with a high concentration of orchards (mainly apple and pear) along river 'De Linge' with a nice sceenery to explore by bike. We have easy connections to cities like Utrecht, 's-Hertogenbosch (15-30 min)

We have a private accommodation available at the nursery for foreign students. It is complete with hot shower, small kitchen, fridge, oven, furnuture, toilet, heating, coolfan, bike, WiFi etc. We also have an unheated caravan available with electricity during summer.

The nursery is situated 20 km south of Utrecht / 20 km north of 's Hertogenbosch and has a trainstation close by (10 min walking distance). Please send a motivation email with some personal information. Because of busy work at the nursery it might take some time for us to reply. Minimum period is 1 month or more.

Both together make a great team and I can recommend the nursery to anyone who wants to get practical and applicable knowledge of nursery work. Since I stayed during the spring period, I learned most about propagation and production of bamboo, ornamental grasses and gingers. I also ... read more
