Thesis research topics

We have the following exciting and pioneering research topics available for horticultura/agricultural students on pre-B.Sc, B.Sc and M.Sc. level:

1- Biobased bamboofibers from temperate bamboos

There is an increasing demand for CO2-absorbing plants which produce long lasting bio-based organic resource materials for low-tec and hi-tec purposes. Bamboo is one of the most interesting plantgroups for this purpose regarding its strength, fast growth and ecological sustainability. Surprisingly, little research has been done into the production capacity, wood quality and cultivation methods of bamboo species that are suitable for the temperate northern European climate. Help us explore the knowledge and possibilities in this area and help build a sustainable future.

2- Waterbamboos for a changing climate

With the increase of wheather extremes with prolonged hot and dry periods alternated with extreme rainfall, flooding and waterlogged soils the search for adaptive plants is more important than ever. In recent years we have collected a unique series of bamboo species that have aeration channels in their roots that allow them to tolerate waterlogging. At the same time, dry periods can also be bridged. What are the application limits of these types? How does their aeration system function? How do they grow and what can these species contribute to a sustainable future with bamboo? Let's find out!

3- Quantification of bamboo ecological functions in an urban environment

Bamboo has major regulation functions. Consider the absorption of CO2, which is converted into oxygen. A function that is of vital importance to our existence as humans. Absorbing nitrogen (No2) and particulate matter can also be of great importance, especially in the city air quality. Think of what plants can offer to the environment; shade from the scorching sun, blocking wind or absorbing sound. Even during heavy rainfall, bamboo offers space for water retention and in places with relief it prevents erosion.
Bamboo has a lot of extra potential compared to other plant species due to its large leaf surface, fast growth and dense root structure. Let's map this out better so that we can make recommendations for sustainable management.

4- Leaf sequence research of gingers, canna and musa
